Amid glowing reviews and excellent survey results from the first event, the
Cultural Council of Cortland County has decided make the Second
Annual Cortland Arts and Wine Festival even bigger and better. The
event will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Courthouse Park in
Cortland from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. – an extension of one hour.
The 2007 Festival featured 16 wineries, over 70 artists, six food vendors
and live music all day. The goal of the Cultural Council for 2008 is to
make this a premier event for New York State by increasing the number
of wineries to 24, increasing the number of artists to 80, increasing the
number of food vendors to seven, extending the live music for one hour
and promoting to tour groups.
“During the first Arts and Wine festival we surveyed the wineries, the
artists and spectators to find out what they liked and what they thought
might need improvement,” said David Beale, executive director of the
Cultural Council. “Much to our surprise for a first time event, the results
were extremely positive.”
Thirteen of the sixteen wineries responded to the survey and all said they
would return. They felt that the festival was well run and well promoted.
The wineries brought over 100 wines to be tasted. Mercer Dairy provided
a special treat with their new wine ice cream in four flavors.
Of the 26 artists who completed the survey, 25 said they would
participate next year. The majority said they did well with art sales and
three artists reported sales of over $500.00. The quality of the vendors on
a scale of one to ten averaged eight.
The food ranged from pulled pork dinners to the typical hamburgers and
hot dogs and from antipasto salads to fine desserts and gourmet cookies.
Almost everyone commented on the music which ranged from classical to
pop to Broadway and from instrumental groups to choral groups, duets
and soloists.
“I don’t know how many people - and vendors, told me that the great
atmosphere and music made this such a relaxing and friendly event,” said
David Blatchley, the project coordinator. “We had nice weather and a
gorgeous setting. What could be better than great wine, outstanding art,
pleasant music and good food?”
When the Cultural Council originally discussed the Arts and Wine
Festival, it was thought that, within a couple of years it would expand to a
two day event. However, the vendors overwhelmingly voted to keep it a
one-day event, at least for now. In any case, the event will be expanded by
one hour to 6:00 p.m. to give people an opportunity to have a dinner and
enjoy the festival. The timing is also a little more conducive to wine tasting.
In a few days, invitations will be sent to the wineries and artists to sign up
for the 2008 event. Wineries who wish to participate may contact David
Blatchley at 607-753-3534 or david@blatchley.info. Artists may contact
