Fifteen wineries in one location offering over 125 different wines (several of them
award winners) at a price far less than the cost of visiting each winery separately. In
addition there will be great food, art from all over the northeast and live music all day.
The festival begins at 10:00 a.m. at Courthouse Park in Cortland and runs until 6:00
p.m. The wine tent will open at Noon and the first 1,000 visitors will receive a free
commemorative wine glass and a Taster’s Guide. The only fee is a $15.00
admission charge to the wine tent and discounted advance sale tickets are available
online on this website.
The award winning wines that will be available for tasting include: 2006 Cabernet
Franc (Silver), 2006 Main Chardonnay (Silver), 2007 Dry Riesling (Silver), and 2007
Semi-Dry Riesling from the King Ferry Winery; Ghost (Best of Class and People’s
Choice) from the Miles Winery; Raspberry (Best Fruit Wine in NYS) and Blackberry
(Gold and Double Gold from the Red Barn Winery (NYS Winery of the Year); and
Wellsely Island White (Bronze) Riesling (Silver) and North Country Red (Bronze) from
the Thousand Islands Winery.
“We think we have a great selection of wines and wineries this year,” said David
Beale, executive director of the Cultural Council of Cortland County, the sponsoring
agency. “It will be interesting to see if people tasting the wines agree with the judges.”
The wineries will be presenting over 125 different varieties of wine and six different
flavors of wine ice cream (which has five-percent alcohol content) for tasting and
purchase. Among the varieties are Chablis, Riesling, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet
Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Honey Wine, Blueberry
Wine, Raspberry Wine, Rhubarb Wine, Pinot Noir, Hard Cider, Concord/Niagara,
Pinot Grigio, Vino Rosso and a host of wines with names reflecting their specific
winery.
All are New York State Wineries. Five of the wineries are new to the Festival.
Because of the alcohol content, access to the wine tent will be limited and controlled.
The number will be limited to the first 3,000 people and there will be an admission
charge of $15.00.
Mercer Dairy isis included as a winery because of its unique wine ice cream. The
Dairy, located in Boonville, NY, produces 36 flavors of regular ice cream which is
marketed over a wide area. For the past several years they have been developing a
wine ice cream with five-percent alcohol content. They have recently accomplished
this task and have received approval to market the six flavors – Peach White
Zinfandel, ala Port, Red Raspberry Chardonnay, Royal White Riesling, Cherry Merlot
and Chocolate Cabernet. While the wine ice cream is considered a food, it can only
be sold where verification of age can be obtained. Presently, most of Mercer Dairy’s
marketing has focused on upscale restaurants and wine tasting events. The
Cortland Arts and Wine Festival is one of their favorite events.
